In the resplendent hallway, at the bottom of the stairs, just outside the debating chamber, Rose Bigod, regent and Queen of the Kingdom of England, stood waiting.

Outside, through the window, darkness was falling fast. The young squire Rose had dispatched made his way through the long hallway in front of her, heading towards the castle door. The knight next to her offered to hold her book. Rose caught his eye and smiled. He looked around as he adjusted his sheathed sword while standing guard, and she finally remembered his name. Alec Red, a lowly but loyal king's guard. His duty was to protect the queen and the royal family from harm at all times, and tomorrow he would escort her safely to York.
